I’ve been a flower enthusiast all of my life, so I appreciate gardens of all types and sizes. I think that a well-cared-for container garden is worthy of as much admiration as a collection of elegant roses planted along a picket fence. Container gardens are a wonderful option for people who don’t have a lot of growing space to work with where they live. I thought I’d use this week’s post to take a closer look at how to set up a container garden that you can be proud of. Enjoy!

What Is Container Gardening?

Container gardening is just what it sounds like. Instead of planting flowers, vegetables, herbs, shrubs, and small trees in a patch of ground, you plant them in a variety of containers. This makes it easy to rearrange the items in your garden to give them more sunlight or allow them some shade. Also, you can be as creative as you want when choosing both your flowers and their containers.

Perfect Places for Container Gardens

I have a container garden on the balcony of my apartment in New York. I frequently rearrange the position of the containers to give my balcony a fresh look! Besides balconies, container gardens are great for small patio areas, porches, and decks. You can even have a small container garden on a single windowsill of an apartment. People who live in urban areas where there’s not much space available can still enjoy vegetables, herbs, and flowers by starting a container garden. I have a neighbor who has a collection of herbs growing in tiny containers on a windowsill in her kitchen. I love to walk in and inhale the scent of mint, oregano, and rosemary in her apartment. She often uses her homegrown herbs in new recipes.

Creative Containers

In some container gardens, the containers actually outshine the flowers, vegetables, and plants inside them. Some examples of containers include terra cotta and ceramic pots as well as cans and even old buckets. Many individuals recycle discarded buckets, pallets, and crates for their container garden. I think that the most appealing container gardens are the ones that have containers in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. One of the containers on my balcony is an old metal washtub that I bought at a flea market. I poked a hole in the bottom of it for drainage and planted a delicate light pink azalea bush. I also have calla lilies growing in an old-fashioned wooden bucket I found at a yard sale.

Flowers That Are Ideal for Container Gardening

Besides azaleas and calla lilies, there are many other kinds of flowers that work well in container gardens. Dianthus, foxglove, snapdragons, petunias, orchids, and pansies are all attractive flowers to try. Broccoli, cabbage, beets, peppers, beans, and peas are all vegetables that would be right at home in a container garden. These vegetables can grow just as easily in containers as they can in a patch of earth.

With container gardening, everyone can enjoy growing a selection of vegetables or nurturing a collection of flowers to call their own!
