Summer is the time to venture out and enjoy our beautiful country. But this summer, I’m not straying too far from home, since there are plenty of great vacation spots in the Northeast. If your family is interested in enjoying lovely scenery, swimming, boating, hiking, observing wildlife, and more, I have what you’re looking for here.

Ten Best Family Vacation Spots in the Northeast

.) Niagara FallsNiagara Falls State Park is a favorite with families and travelers who love nature. The Cave of the Winds tour in Niagara Falls leads you onto a catwalk near the base of the falls. Put on your raincoat and get ready to be impressed! Or you could observe Niagara Falls from the Niagara SkyWheel. Check them out from a height of 175 feet! Be sure to stop by the Niagara Falls Discovery Center to learn the history of the falls. I’ve visited Niagara Falls a few times, and I’m always stunned by their magnificence. Getting sprayed by the tumbling, cascading water is my favorite part.

.) Cape Cod, MA. Does your family love a summer vacation at the beach? If so, there are plenty of beaches in Cape Cod, including Race Point Beach, where your family can swim, sunbathe, or explore its impressive dunes. You can also rent bicycles and ride the trails located near the beach. Fort Hill Trail in Eastham is good bet if your family enjoys bird-watching and other outdoor activities. Water Wizz is a popular water park in the area with water slides, tubing, water tunnels, and more.

.) The Adirondacks. Families have plenty of fun things to do in the Adirondacks, including camping near Saranac Lake. Take in the beautiful surroundings from a canoe, kayak, or boat. Or go on a hike and check out local wildlife, including loons, moose, coyotes, and painted turtles. Also, visit the Wild Center, where you can learn even more about the animals of the Adirondacks. Be sure to take the Wild Walk above the treetops for a one-of-a-kind view of the Adirondack forest.

.) Lake George, NYLake George is an ideal vacation spot for families who love boating. Board a steamboat or pontoon boat and take a relaxing tour of the lake. You may see a great blue heron, a peregrine falcon, or even a bald eagle. The Buck Mountain Trail and Shelving Rock Falls are two ideas for families who love to hike.

.) The Connecticut Coast. Vacationing families have a lot of fun options here, including a visit to Mystic Aquarium to see the harbor seals, jellyfish, and loggerhead turtles along with many other types of sea life. Be sure to check out Ocean Beach Park in New London to walk the pristine beaches, stroll the boardwalk, ride the carousel, swim in the Olympic-size swimming pool, and more!

.) Wildwood, NJ. Seaport Aquarium in Wildwood is an exciting and educational stop for families. Admire the sharks, stingrays, and other sea creatures living there. Go whale- and dolphin-watching on one of the many boat tours in Wildwood. Rent a bike or take off on foot to tour the famous boardwalk to ride the rides, taste the local cuisine and people watch.

.) Boston, MA. The New England Aquarium in Boston provides visitors with access to thousands of sea animals, including California sea lions, turtles, lionfish, African penguins, and many others. Visit historic Fenway Park to catch a game and sample a part of baseball history, or walk the Freedom Trail to learn more about the history of our nation. While you’re in the area, travel to nearby Salem, MA, and take a walking tour of historic cemeteries or visit the picturesque Baker’s Island Lighthouse.

.) Hampton Beach, NH. The Casino Cascade Water Slide is a must-do on your family’s next trip to Hampton Beach. You can set up camp near the ocean at Tidewater Campground. Visit North Hampton State Beach or Wallis Sands State Park to enjoy the swimming, boating, and snorkeling action.

.) Hershey, PA. No family vacation to Hershey is complete without a trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World. Learn how the famous chocolate bars are created, taste some goodies, and make your own candy bar while you’re there. Take on some amusement park rides, and enjoy the view from the boardwalk in Hershey Park. Explore nearby Lancaster County to take an Amish buggy ride or take the Historic Lancaster walking tour.

.) Acadia National Park, Maine. Visit Acadia National Park and tour the park’s mountains, valleys, and other scenery in a horse-drawn carriage, or choose one of the easier walking trails that cover 125 miles throughout the park. Check out the Nature Center in the park to learn about the animals and plants there from knowledgeable naturalists. Journey to Echo Lake Beach or Sand Beach to build sand castles, wade in the water, or look for a red-tailed hawk, a ring-necked duck, or other stately birds that reside in Acadia National Park.
