There are so many things I love about the early days of spring. I like seeing the buds start to appear on the trees in my neighborhood. I enjoy the fresh daffodils, stepping into rain puddles, and thinking of how to organize my vegetable garden. This week, I've gathered together some of my favorite quotes to add to the spring celebration.

Celebrating Gardening and Spring

"The earth has its music for those who will listen."-George Santayana

"A light exists in spring, not present in the year, at any other period, when March is scarcely here."-Emily Dickinson

"The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul." -Alfred Austin

"A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust." -Gertrude Jekyll

"My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece." -Claude Monet

"Earth laughs in flowers." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

"The garden, historically, is the place where all the senses are exploited. Not just the eye, but the ear - with water, with birds. And there is texture, too, in plants you long to touch." -William Howard Adams

"My green thumb came only as a result of the mistakes I made while learning to see things from the plant's point of view." -H. Fred Dale

"Weather means more when you have a garden. There's nothing like listening to a shower and thinking how it is soaking in around your green beans." -Marcelene Cox

"It is a golden maxim to cultivate the garden for the nose, and the eyes will take care of themselves." -Robert Louis Stevenson

"In the night the cabbages catch at the moon, the leaves drip silver, the rows of cabbages are a series of little silver waterfalls in the moon." -Carl Sandburg

"Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint,
and the soil and sky as canvas." -Elizabeth Murray

"A garden always gives back more than it receives."-Mara Bemish

"Spring makes its own statement, so loud and clear that the gardener seems to be only one of the instruments, not the composer." -Geoffrey B. Charlesworth

"Only in dreams of spring shall I ever see again
the flowering of my cherry trees." -Frances Hodgson Burnett

"Gardening requires lots of water, most of it in the form of perspiration." -Lou Erickson

"Your first job is to prepare the soil. The best tool for this is your neighbor's motorized garden tiller. If your neighbor does not own a tiller, suggest that he buy one." -Dave Barry

"There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments." - Janet Kilburn Phillips

"A good gardener always plants 3 seeds -one for the bugs, one for the weather and one for himself." - Leo Aikman

"The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses" -Hanna Rion

"Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul" - Luther Burbank

"It was such a pleasure to sink one's hands into the warm earth, to feel at one's fingertips the possibilities of the new season" -Kate Morton

"Nothing is more the child of art than a garden" - Sir Walter Scott

"A garden is always a series of losses set against a few triumphs, like life itself" -May Sarton

"It didn't occur to me that gardening, like music, could demand practice, patience, a willingness to make mistakes" -Amy Stewart

"Now every field is clothed with grass, and every tree with leaves; now the woods put forth their blossoms and the year assumes its gay attire." -Virgil

"Never yet was a springtime, when the buds forgot to bloom." -Margaret Elizabeth Sangster

"Spring is when life's alive in everything." -Christina Rossetti

"I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden." - Ruth Stout

"Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush." - Doug Larson

"Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn." - Lewis Grizzard

"It is Spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart."-Rainer Maria Rilke

"And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest." -Percy Bysshe Shelley

"The beautiful Spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also." -Harriet Ann Jacobs

"Behold, my friends, the Spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!" -Sitting Bull
