Flowers that mean Love and Romance

Flowers that mean Love and Romance

Last week I wrote about the most popular flowers for Valentine’s Day; I figure that now is a good time to continue on the topic of love and discuss some lesser-known romantic flowers and flower meanings. If you recall, roses, tulips, carnations, daisies, and orchids were the stars presented last week. Indeed these flowers have very romantic meanings, but they aren’t the only ones as you shall soon find out. Break out of the ordinary by giving some of these meaningful and love-infused beauties.

Lilac

Purple lilacs represent the beginning of love or a first love and are a perfect gift for new couples. The recipient of lilacs is sure to recall this bouquet given early on in the relationship every time she smells lilacs, and every spring while lilac shrubs are in bloom. A lilac shrub would also be a great gift for those with the land to plant it on.

Sunflower

Sunflowers represent longevity, adoration, and pure love. These flowers remind me of cheerful faces, and when growing they follow the sun, moving throughout the day. They are easily obtained from florists, or you can easily grow your own from seed-which could be a romantic activity for you and your sweetheart. Additionally, the seeds of the flower attract wildlife.

Camellias

Some of you may have never seen a camellia except in pictures if you live in colder climates. Camellias grow as shrubs in warmer regions and they are difficult to find as a cut flower because they tend to be fragile. These romantic flowers are stunning and look similar to roses, and like roses have different meanings depending on the color. Red camellias say “you’re a flame in my heart”, pink symbolizes longing, and white says “you’re adorable”. If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where camellias are in bloom, I recommend you take the time to pick some for your darling. They are also available as bonsai trees.

Primrose

The primrose, I think, is the most overlooked when it comes to romantic flowers; it means “I can’t live without you” or “our love is eternal”. A perfect choice for Valentine’s day or any other romantic occasion. Generally, these little gems are available in the spring as small potted plants at grocery stores and florists in bright colors such as fuchsia, yellow, purple, red, white, and bi-colors. Some have a lovely sweet scent. They are also sold in garden stores as perennial plants for the garden. Beware though, evening primrose represents inconstancy.

Stock

Stock is another highly scented flower that will be sure to leave a lasting impression on your loved one. Stock means “you’ll always be beautiful to me” and represents bonds of affection. Stock is available in a rainbow of colors and is often used in bouquets. The wonderful clove fragrance can fill a room and a lover’s heart.

Red Chrysanthemums

Red chrysanthemums mean “I love you”, plain and simple. These beauties make very hardy cut flowers and are widely available in bouquets. They last a long time, just like true love. Mums are available in different flower forms and various shades of red, so think twice before dismissing them as a commonly known humdrum flower. As with roses, different colors of this flower have different meanings.

Forget-Me-Not

This sample of flowers that mean love and romance just wouldn’t be complete with the mention of forget-me-nots; the name is one of the flower meanings, but another meaning is true love. This delicate little blue beauty is the sweetest gesture of love, as it generally has to be picked from the garden by the giver. Pair them with blue violets that bloom at the same time in the same conditions-blue violets represent faithfulness and say you will always be there. Can’t find any forget-me-nots? Look in the seed section of the garden center and buy a packet of forget-me-not seeds and plant them with your true love. I like to press and dry these flowers and use them in crafts.

Alstroemeria

This flower comes in many colors and is widely used in bouquets. It represents a strong bond with another person as well as prosperity. Mix it with some mums or sunflowers for a bouquet that is jam-packed with flower meanings of romance and love, or give a bouquet of several alstroemeria flowers alone.
